_{KALKAN BEACH PLAYGROUND ART PROJECT}

The playground by Kalkan Beach, which was transformed earlier this year thanks to the generosity of Kalkan residents and visitors, is to get more attention soon, when a group of young artists visit Kalkan, to create new murals on the concrete walls behind the playground.

 

Already, a new safe rubber floor has been laid close to the play equipment, and artificial turf has been laid in other areas. A wooden fence has been erected and painted with fun designs. It's looking pretty good.

But one thing that still needs to be done is repainting of the murals that adorn the eight concrete walls forming the backdrop to the play area. The current paintings are probably past their best, and in need of a makeover. We explain below what is going to happen.

 

On Monday 31st August, ten art students from Robert College in Istanbul, accompanied by their art teacher Gülay, will come down to Kalkan for 11 days, to repaint these murals. Ten local Kalkan children, with their leader Nilüfer, will also be involved. The students will be aged

16 or thereabouts. Prior to their arrival, it is intended to paint out the existing paintings, so that the artists have a blank, white background to start with.

 

This is an exciting project that will result in a high profile work of art, which Kalkan visitors and residents alike can enjoy. If you are close to Kalkan Beach, why not stop off and take a look at these artists at work.

The co-ordinator of the project in Kalkan is Bilge Bayer, who is herself a talented local artist. Bilge has asked if KTLN members would like to give some thought to what could be painted on these walls. So if you have any bright ideas, please contact us and we will pass them on to Bilge. Who knows - your suggestion may end up painted on one of the walls, for everyone to see.
