DEVASTATION OF GREEN...

While hidden in its small bay and it was a lovely town, with excessive and disorganized growth in recent years Kalkan everyday owns its new but ugly appearance. Look at old pictures of Kalkan; while it was a tiny town, with its deep blue bay, virgin coasts, and the green picturesque views of background mountain at which Kalkan backs, it was a Mediterranean pearl with which everybody may fall in love.  Now? Now, it is rather difficult to say the same things and I believe it will be more difficult in future if we do not take immediate measures.

Nowadays, a second road is under construction in direction to Kaş. Due to terrain conditions we understand the road is being constructed at a higher level, aiming at lower retaining wall and excavation costs. The area is being cut with excavators, resulting in irrecoverable damages to natural land. Besides, this area is invaluable background of Kalkan. I believe it will be a painful experience when everybody understands that there are beautiful alternative ways to construct an access towards Kaş, constructing a tunnel under the part of the mountain at which Kalkan backs, but though the nature is damaged irrecoverably. The skate of this mountain is the background of each Kalkan picture taken from sea side. Unfortunately, most beautiful part of nature is disturbed, demolishing the green. What for? Unknown and it will remain unknown.

We need to say “stop” to this unconcerned behavior of responsible. Otherwise, it will be too late. One of prerequisite for a beautiful Kalkan is green landscape around the town, and everybody must act in unity to protect it. Kalkan must be protected heartfelt in areas where add value to Kalkan. Instead of opening these areas to construction, as a solution we need to appropriate to keep them green. Instead of destroying the nature and beauty indifferently and mercilessly, although more expensive we must prefer the methods that have ecological and touristic values. Otherwise, one day, we will be living in a Kalkan that lost its all valuable beauties.
